Pentewan is a pretty little village just off the St Austell to Mevagissey road on the south coast of Cornwall. Pentewan was mainly a fishing community, and at one time a major china clay port, but now depends mainly on tourism for its livlihood. Offering a variety of small shops and cafes, this small community happily share their lovely sandy beach and countryside setting with the many visitors who enjoy the area.
‘The Ship Inn’ is Pentewan’s small and friendly village pub which offers a public bar, lounge and dining room as well as a beer garden adjacent to the old disused clay harbour. Pentewan Board School built in 1878 is now a restaurant, Into The Woods, which offers freshly cooked, locally sourced, produce.
Pentewan is probably best known for Pentewan Sands – a camping and caravanning park that has occupied the beautiful sandy beach there for over 60 years offering safe, family holidays. Recently updated, Pentewan Sands now offers The Seahorse Centre, an all-weather leisure and recreation centre featuring two indoor pools, a jacuzzi, children’s play areas and a great selection of dining options both here and in the Hub-Box and Bar situated on the beach.
Heading inland, The Pentewan Valley trail is a 4km woodland and riverside walk, which follows the bed of an old railway to the village of London Apprentice.
Another interesting walk with lovely coastal views is from Pentewan to Black Head and Gerrans Point and then on to Higher Porthpean, Duporth and Charlestown.
